Women In Magazines: An Evolution of Sexism

I produced 'Women in Magazines' with Tommy Pittenger for our Gender, Media and Diversity class. Our video draws real quotes from women's magazines spanning the late 19th century through present publications. We highlighted how some women's magazines speak to their readers as looked upon objects with potentially dangerous advice and social forewarning. We chose this topic because we believe it to be relevant and an important conversation.

DAN PILLERS

I produced this multimedia piece with Melissa Murray and Neil Kirkpatrick for a weekend workshop class in Portland, OR. The three of us are close friends, and this piece was our first major for-school project together during our education at the University of Oregon. We connected with Dan Pillers, a found material sculptor who focuses on the realities faced within the gay community. His work is powerful, and his story is inspiring. The three of us pre-interviewed, interviewed on camera, collected B-roll, and edited the video in three days. This video won Flux Magaine's 2013 Film Festival, a competition of student work judged by editors of Flux Magazine. We won a GoPro!

SK8 B8

SK8 B8 is Julian Master and Jack McNutt, musicians and friends of mine from high school. The SK8 B8 videos were the first projects I worked on with Neil Kirkpatrick and Melissa Murray. We wanted to make live music videos, and eventually tried to create a class within the School of Journalism and Communication that would bring musicians in to be recorded live, interviewed, and written about. Our idea was met with beurocracy, and in my senior year I had bigger battles to fight. However, we inspired a class that came after our time at the UofO: (the late) Tom Wheeler's JAM (Journalism and Music). We filmed the SK8 B8 videos to test how our idea might play out and to combine our skills in audio engineering, lighting, filming, and multi-cam editing. The music is ridiculous and awesome. This was a win-win for us and SK8 B8.
